What can the Academy do for you?
Digital Explorer’s online Academy for Exploration is designed to make it easier for expeditions to connect with schools. Expeditions have the ability to inspire the next generation to understand and take action to build a better world.
The Academy has been created to help expeditions bring the frontiers of science and discovery to the classroom.

Why register?
Registering your expedition means that you no longer have to worry about searching for a schools audience. We know how hard it is to build a schools network AND plan and communicate an expedition, so we do the hard part for you.
When you register your expedition we ask for some simple information that will help schools use your expedition in the classroom.
What is your educational focus?
- This can be as narrow or broad as you want it to be – everything from a land use study of a city to a cross-curricular exploration of the Nile. It is always helpful if you can try to make links to the curriculum.
Do you have the facility to answer questions from the field?
- It is great for pupils, if they can interact with the expedition and Q&As are one way of doing it. The easiest way is to provide an email address for pupils to send questions to and you can email back from the field or use a web page with comments to gather questions and update this from the field.
Will you be preparing educational resources for schools?
- This is perhaps the most difficult section for expeditions to consider. Many expeditions partner with an educational organization to assist with this, or ask a local teacher to help. Digital Explorer also provides a service to expeditions to create educational resources for expeditions (see below).
Will you be offering the facility for live chats?
- Conducting a live chat from an expedition is an incredibly rewarding experience for both the expedition team and the young people involved. You will probably need either a satellite phone or a satellite modem and computer (for video chats we currently use skype).
Will you be offering school talks?
- School talks are a great way of engaging pupils before and after an expedition.
How do I make my expedition more educational?
There are some very simple ways that you can make your expedition more educational.
- Tell local schools what you are doing
- Give talks to pupils before and after your expedition
- Call a school live from your expedition
- Ask a teacher to help make a list of useful photos and videos for the classroom
You can, of course, create an education project on a much larger scale, involving multimedia content live from the field, integration with twitter, facebook and YouTube, and a whole range of resources for the classroom.
